A borrow pit is the site where earth is excavated to supply fill material used elsewhere in the project. This term is used because the material is "borrowed" from one location to be placed in another to raise or level ground, build embankments, or fill depressions. In contrast, a cut section refers to material removed from the ground in place to achieve a lower profile at the origin site, not for use elsewhere. A fill section is where material is placed to raise the ground, which is the destination rather than the source. A slope stake is simply a survey marker used to establish and check the slope, not a source of material.
